Synergia Foundation was founded by Tobby Simon in the year 1999. It all began when Tobby played an active role in assisting Nobel Prize winner, Medicines Sans Frontier (MSF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to validate antiretroviral (ARV) manufacturing facilities of Indian generic companies in order to facilitate procurement of quality ARV generics from India for their global relief projects. This voluntary initiative was instrumental in bringing about a breakthrough in AIDs treatment provision making generic ARVs available at a nearly 60% cost reduction. As a result of this, millions of afflicted patients around the world especially in Africa, which is inhabited by just over 12% of the world's population, but estimated to be home to more than 60% of the global AIDS-infected population, could now afford to receive the much needed antiretroviral treatment.
The success of this voluntary initiative got Tobby to realize how the efforts of a single organisation can have ripple effects that touch the lives of millions for the better and thus The Synergia Foundation was born.
Synergia went on to work with MSF, AEDES and the World Health Organization in Geneva to coordinate relief work in Gujarat, India, when it was devastated by an earthquake. Working closely with World Vision and local governments, Synergia was able to jump start infrastructure activities and help those affected by the tsunami in India and Sri Lanka.
Simultaneously, Synergia Foundation has been deeply involved in the upliftment and education of children in a number of institutions and societies like Sneha Nilaya, ECHO, Action Aid, World Vision, Akshya Patra, Little Sisters of the Poor, Missionaries of Charity (Mysore and Bangalore), Sumanahalli (for people suffering from leprosy) and Good Shepherds Convent.
Over the past few years we have pursued high-quality, independent research on policy, economic and societal developments with the aim of promoting economic and social inclusiveness. We have presented our findings at global public policy conferences, World Trade Organization, World Information Technology Forum, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, John F Kennedy School of Government, Indian Institute of Management and Indian Institute of Science.
Contributing to education and learning is our most cherished goal and Synergia Foundation’s next step is to set up a Centre of Excellence for knowledge dissemination.
